Deepika Padukone (pronounced [d̪iːpɪkaː pəɖʊkoːɳ]; born 5 January 1986) is an Indian film actress and model. She has established a successful career in Hindi (Bollywood) films, and is cited in the media as one of the most popular and attractive Indian celebrities.
Padukone, the daughter of the badminton player Prakash Padukone, was born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore. As a teenager she played badminton in national level championships, but left her career in sport to become a fashion model. She soon received offers for film roles, and made her acting debut in 2006 as the titular character of the Kannada film Aishwarya. Padukone then played dual roles in her first Bollywood release—the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om—and won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Padukone received praise for portraying the lead female role in the 2009 romance Love Aaj Kal, but her performances in the 2008 romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno and the 2010 comedy Housefull met with negative reviews. She followed it with roles in a series of commercially unsuccessful films that failed to propel her career forward. The 2012 box office hit Cocktail marked a significant turning point in her career, earning her critical acclaim and Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies. In 2013, Padukone established herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema with primary roles in the comedies Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express, both of which rank among the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time.
Alongside her acting career, Padukone participates in stage shows, has written columns for an Indian newspaper, and is a prominent celebrity endorser for brands and products. Her off-screen life is the subject of fervent tabloid reporting in India.
Deepika made her cinematic debut in a Kannada film, Aishwarya in 2006. The actress literally exploded into Bollywood with Om Shanti Om (2007) opposite King Khan. For the same film, Deepika Padukone was honoured with the Filmfare award for Sony Fresh Face of the year.
She also won the Filmfare award for the best female debutante for the year 2007.Her 2008 release was Yash Raj's Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor, which had a fairly decent run at the box office.
It also remains her biggest commercial success so far. She subsequently appeared in films such as Love Aaj Kal (2009) and Housefull (2010). While the former earned her a Filmfare nomination in the Best Actress category, the latter emerged as a commercial success
In addition to acting, Padukone is also the ambassador of prominent brands such as Tissot, Sony Cybershot, Nescafe and Kingfisher Airlines.
Deepika Padukone is the daughter of former badminton champion Prakash Padukone. The model-turned-actress did her schooling from Sophia High School, Bangalore and completed her graduation at Mount Carmel College.
Deepika started her career by modelling in television advertising campaigns for Liril soap, Close-Up and Limca.Deepika hit the international scene when Maybelline made her their new international cover face.At the fifth annual Kingfisher Fashion Awards, she was awarded the title 'Model of the Year'.
Shortly Deepika was chosen as one of the models for the Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar 2006, thus cementing her reputation as a supermodel.Deepika gave her debut performance by starring in the music video Naam Hai Tera from the pop album Aap Ka Suroor by Himesh Reshammiya.
She began the year 2011 with an item number in Rohan Sippy's Dum Maaro Dum starring Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu in the lead. Her song was a remixed version of Zeenat Aman's iconic song from Hare Rama Hare Krishna.
The raunchy lyrics and suggestive dancing received mixed reviews. The Deccan Chronicle mentioned her moves as "mechanised gyrations", while Adarsh wrote, "Deepika scorches the screen in the title track. "
She will next be featured in Homi Adajania's Cocktail opposite Saif Ali Khan, Soundarya Rajnikanth's Tamil film Kochadaiyaan opposite Rajnikanth and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

Deepika was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her family moved to Bangalore, India, when she was eleven months old. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a retired badminton player of international repute, and her mother is a travel agent. Padukone also has a younger sister, Anisha. Deepika attended Sophia High School in Bangalore, and completed her pre-university studies at Mount Carmel College Bangalore. While in high school she played badminton at the state level.However, she was not keen on pursuing a career as a badminton player.
Deepika Padukone has appeared in several print and television commercials like Liril, Limca and Close-up. She was the brand ambassador for Jewels of India, a jewellery exhibition and the also face of Maybelline, an international brand. She also appeared in the 2006 Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar.
In 2006 itself, Deepika made her cinematic debut in the Kannada film Aishwarya opposite actor Upendra. The very next year, Deepika made a successful Bollywood debut with Farah Khan’s blockbuster Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
Deepika was then seen romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor and alongside Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba. The film performed reasonably well at the box office.
In 2009, she was once again seen in a double-role along with Akshay Kumar in Chandni Chowk To China. Next she was paired with Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal. The movie was well received at the box office.
In 2010, she had a total of five releases; Karthik Calling Karthik, Housefull, Lafangey Parindey, Break Ke Baad and period film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se. Deepika was seen in Desi Boyz and Aarakshan in 2011; while Desi Boyz did well at the box-office the latter failed to do so.
Her upcoming films are Race 2, Cocktail and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.
